WISH YOU WERE HERE I MIGHT BE HAPPY THEN The white splashed she-cat tiptoed across the white, fluffy snow. She shivered, sending a hard ripple through her dark orange striped pelt. Her fur was thin and didn't do much to keep her warm. Leafbare was her least favorite season for many reasons. Snow was annoying and there was normally ice on the rivers which meant less prey if it couldn't be broken. She shook her head, glancing over her shoulder to see if her apprentice, Maplepaw, was following her. When she saw that he indeed was, Sunstar smiled, a purr rumbling in her throat. "Are you ready?" she meowed, her tail swaying gently as a cold breeze tugged at her. "Hopefully once we start moving it'll keep us warm." She yawned, gazing across the white scenery. It was pretty, sure... but it just wasn't for her. She licked down her fur as she waited for her apprentice to catch up and, once he was close enough, she began walking slowly again. She yawned. "What's your favorite season?" she turned her head to her apprentice and then realized that he had only been living for a few moons which meant he would only know about leafbare, leaffall, and greenleaf. "I think mine is probably newleaf... It's so vibrant, all of the beautiful colors. The smells are nice, too. Oh, and the sounds! I love bird songs. I guess greenleaf is nice also because the water's refreshing when it's too hot..." She paused herself, realizing she was beginning to ramble "Are you excited? We're almost to the river. Hopefully we'll be able to break the ice, but if not then I can teach you how to hunt birds."

Maplepaw shivered as his feet crunched against the icy snow. He felt a purr escape his throat as his mentor talked. "Well," He said, "Newleaf sounds the coolest. I've always wanted to see how colorful the world can be. I'd climb up the tallest tree, all the way too the tippy top, and lay down and just look, look at what our clan has accomplished after so long, how far we've come." He felt the icy cold breeze whip his face as he rushed forward, full of brand new energy. He was so excited to finally hunt again, after he sprained his paw just half a moon ago. He turned his head to look at Sunstar. "Sunstar, one day I'm going to be as good as you. I'm going to work so hard every day, so one day I can be just like you." He purred before turning his head back around, and slowing down to a more moderate pace. "I can't wait to hunt! I'll help break the ice, so we can definitely fish. I bet it can't hold up against two cats!" He chirped, his tail lashing impatiently back and forth. "Sunstar! I see it!" He yowled. Hurling himself toward the back, he skidded to a stop at the edge, and looked into the watery depths through the thin sheet of ice.

WISH YOU WERE HERE I MIGHT BE HAPPY THEN "It does," she replied with a small chuckle, a smile growing on her face, "It's beautiful. The colors are stunning." She continued walking as she listened to her apprentice talk and blinked, surprised by the compliment. She purred again, "I'm glad I have such an enthusiastic and hard working apprentice! I bet you'll be better than me by the time you're a warrior. Make sure you don't work yourself too hard, though. Making time to take breaks is important, too," Sunstar flicked Maplepaw gently on the shoulder with her long, striped tail. She stretched up her head a little further, just barely catching a glimpse of the river. "I can't wait to teach you how to fish," she responded cheerily. "You can help, but I don't want you getting too far onto the ice. I don't want you to fall in." They approached the ice and Sunstar paused, shaking out her alabaster socks. "Alright, make sure when you're cracking ice that you're careful. You want to be gentle but you also want to use some force, if that makes sense." She stepped out onto the ice, swiftly coming up and dropping back down, leaving a nice crack in the ice. "Like this. This part was particularly easy to break." She stepped back but then perked her ears, "Oh! Also, make sure you always check the ice before you break it. You want to be able to measure how much force you're going to need. I'm used to doing it and I just walk out onto the ice, but honestly that's not a very good idea..." She laughed at herself lightly. "I think you should try. Only if you want to, of course."

He carefully listened to his mentor, taking in every word and consideration she said. He nodded in understandment, and checked the ice to make sure he wouldn't fall in, just like she said. He carefully looked it up and down, and cautiously walked onto the ice. He figured he wouldn't need a ton of force, but just a small amount would be too little. He reared up on his hind legs, and gently, but full of power, hit the cracked ice with his paws. A big chunk of the ice broke off, and he picked it up with his teeth, feeling the sting of the ice cold water crash against his teeth. He quickly threw it onto the other side of the bank, and came back to his spot. One last time, he reared up on his hind paws, and struck down, with a little bit less force this time. He leaped backwards, just before the ice crumbled beneath him. He shook off the snowflakes that had fallen onto his back, and smiled at his mentor. "I did it! I mean, it was close but whatever." He purred, flicking his tail in triumph. His eyes blazed with adrenaline, and his twitchy feet showed it too. Now, he couldn't wait to fish. He wanted to feed his clan, as it was harder to get prey during the winter as lots of it was hibernating. He sat down and whisked his tail over his paws, his ears now twitching, trying to release some energy. "Ok, can we fish now? I really want too! There's hungry mouths at camp, you know. It's also fun too! Do you remember your first time fishing?" He babbled on, his excitement taking over him.

WISH YOU WERE HERE I MIGHT BE HAPPY THEN Sunstar sat back onto the snowy bank and waited for Maplepaw to take his turn cracking the ice. She watched him stand onto his paws and then come crashing down, cracking the ice with ease. She nodded in approval, "Good, good," she mewed, curling her tail over her paws. She watched him do it again and her fur spiked, lurching herself to her paws when she saw the ice nearly drag him into the freezing water. "Woah!" she exclaimed, trotting over, "Be careful! I thought you were going to fall in." Her heart was pounding, but she let out an exhale of relief. "Be careful." She repeated sternly. She looked into the hole in the ice that they had made together and crouched down next to it. "Yes, we can actually fish now. The first thing you need to do is learn how to be patient. While fishing, you're going to be doing a lot of waiting. Crouch down like so; make sure your shoulders are loose so your arm can strike the water quickly when you see a fish pass by." Sunstar smiled as he began speaking again. Oh, he reminded her of her younger self. There were too many similarities not to see herself in him. "Oh yes, I do remember my first time hunting. My mentor's name was Bearstep. Don't let his name fool you, though, he was a really gentle stepper!" Her smile only grew as she talked until she remembered that they were hunting. "Oh!" she was stone faced in an instant, turning her head to stare focused at the water. "Alright. So.. we wait. You are going to want to learn the fish's swimming patterns while you're watching. Don't strike too soon, but don't strike too late." She squinted at the water for a few minutes before a white and orange arm darted out, claws extended. They hooked onto the slimy scales of a fish and she pulled it out, slamming it onto the ice roughly, causing the ice to crumble a little but not enough to break.
"Like that! That was a little quick, though... If you need a better step by step, I can give one! But if you want, you can try now. I'll be watching right here in case anything happens. Oh! And make sure your shadow doesn't fall over the water! Picking a good place to crouch is a good idea."

He nodded, understanding her instructions. "I'll try now!" He chirped, and walked over to the bank of the water. He crouched down on the icy snow, not letting his shadow fall onto the water. Maplepaw looked over at Sunstar, and smiled, showing he was very excited to hunt. He turned his attention back to the water, and waited. His eyes scanned the freezing water, its droplets so cold it burned. After a few minutes, he saw a small brownish fish about to come into the pocket. As soon as it came, Maplepaw lashed out, snagging the fish with one of his claws. Since he had no hope of smacking it onto the ice without dropping it, he flung it over his shoulder. He chased after it, and bit its spine. He heard a nice crunch, and looked at his first kill in delight. "Quite a messy kill, but a kill's a kill!" He purred in delight, dropping the fish by the other. He wanted to try again. He hunkered back over at the same spot, making sure once again, that his shadow did not cross into the water. His eyes flickered from one end of the water to the other. He saw another fish, a big fish, start to head towards his way. He prepared himself, and unsheathed his claws. As the fish swam by, he lasted his paw out, as quick as a lightning bolt, and caught the fish by his belly. He scooped it out of the water and smacked it against the bank, killing the fish instantly. "Wow, that was an awesome catch! He was slow, so he was an easy one." He chirped, returning that fish to the pile. "But I don't think I'm doing enough. I mean we have a lot of warriors, and I only caught two fish." He said as he flattened his ears to the back of his head. He always doubts himself, even when he's doing something good. It's something he's learning to overcome. He sighed, took a deep breath in, and perked his ears back up. "What am I talking about. I just helped the clan, so they'll be happy, right?" He said, looking at Sunstar in hopes she could bless him with a few reassuring words. He gasped as he remembered that he didn't thank Starclan. He immediately dropped down, and thanked Starclan for his catches. "Sorry." He said in dismay, looking towards the ground. "Now I really did mess up, didn't I." He whimpered, as his feet and ears started to twitch nervously.

She sat back, waiting for the young tabby to try and catch something. She shifted her weight on the soft, cold snow, nodding her head in encouragement at everything he did. She would occasionally murmur a "good, good" or "excellent, keep waiting," most of the time too quiet to hear so that she wouldn't distract him. She leaned forward in anticipation as small shapes of fish swam by, one by one. She was excited to see him catch something. Finally, after a while, Maplepaw's forearm extended, dipping swiftly and smoothly into the icy water. He flung it out quickly and surprised Sunstar so much that she almost leapt up. She was about to come help but saw him turn to chase the fish he had caught. "Good job," she purred, "you did really well even if you almost threw it halfway across the forest." She smiled as he went back to the fishing spot again, this time not saying anything. She knew he'd do perfectly fine catching fish on his own. He was a talented apprentice and she was lucky to be training him. He was probably already better than her and he'd just begun his training! The splashing of another fish being pulled out of the water snapped her out of her thoughts and back to training. Her eyes focused on Maplepaw's brown pelt as he smacked it against the bank. "That was an awesome catch," she praised with a happy tone, "I'm proud of you! It's huge, the Clan's going to love it." She tilted her head in confusion at his upset expression. "Don't talk like that," she meowed, standing up to brush her tail along his back, "you're just an apprentice, you're doing your best. Two fish is plenty for you to catch. Remember that we're just training right now! There will be other warriors on hunting patrols to catch more fish for the rest of the Clan. Today you did perfectly and I couldn't have been blessed with a better apprentice, Maplepaw." She nodded her head to his next words. "I bet all of the other apprentices are going to be jealous of your catches!" She blinked in surprise as he dropped down. "Oh Maplepaw," Sunstar meowed, shaking her head. "It's fine. You remembered to thank StarClan, I'm sure it's fine. You didn't mess up at all today, training was really successful." She bent down, stretching out her body with a yawn. "Anyway, we can catch some more if you'd like, or I could teach you how to catch birds and other land prey." 428 words (i gave up on my posting template )

He purred loudly at her praise and reassuring words. "Thank you Sunstar, it's an honor to have you mentor me!" He chirped, and nodded his head in gratitude. He thought for a moment- should he continue continue to catch fish, or try something new? He decided. "Sunstar, I'd like to try to hunt birds, and other land prey. I've got the basics down for fishing, so why not learn something new? Anyways, the more you know, the more you can help the clan!" He said, his eyes flicking back and forth, scanning every inch of the trees and ground. "You know, I've always loved this clan so much. I wouldn't give it up for the world." He said, his voice showing every inch of honesty. He trotted back over to where the more dense trees were, and tried to catch a scent. He could only smell the mixed scents of the forest, as he still hasn't learned how to catch prey's scent yet. He trotted back to Sunstar, a new look of adventure in his eyes. "Sunstar, I'm so excited! I can't wait another minute! Let's go hunt!" He whispered excitedly. He felt his paws begin to twitch, more adrenaline filling him too the brim. Suddenly, he realized he had too much energy! He shot towards the nearest tree, and jumped up onto it. He hooked his long talons on, and scurried his way up. He reached the third branch and climbed up onto it, huffing and puffing. He looked out into the horizon and smiled. "Sunstar, the views really nice from up here!" He said, giggling to himself. He decided he should get down, and jumped to the second branch, to the first, and onto the ground. "Wow, that was fun! I needed to get some of that energy out." He said happily. He shook off the excess snow on his pelt, and sat down on the fluffy white snow, waiting for Sunstar to teach him how to hunt.
